Packing · Practical guide

Pack lighter. Enjoy the journey more.

A few considered choices can make your bag easier to carry — without leaving the useful things behind.

Packing well starts before anything goes into your suitcase. Begin with the trip you are actually taking, then give every item a reason to come along.

01. Start with the bag you can take.

Check the size, weight and number of bags included with your booked fare, including any connecting flights. Measure the bag, including handles and wheels where your airline requires it. Use your own airline’s current rules; for example, British Airways publishes its baggage guidance here.

02. Build outfits that work together.

Lay clothes out before packing. Choose tops and bottoms you can combine in different ways, then add layers for the forecast and your planned activities. One useful layer can do more work than several “just in case” outfits.

03. Give every extra item a job.

Ask when you will use the second jacket, extra pair of shoes or spare accessory. If there is no clear answer, leave it out. Check what your accommodation provides before packing duplicates.

04. Think about laundry, not just trip length.

If washing clothes is practical, plan enough outfits between washes. Confirm the facilities before relying on them, and allow time for clothes to dry. For a family trip, keep each person’s everyday essentials easy to find.

05. Take the packed bag for a test run.

Lift it, carry it and check you can manage it alongside your other bags. Keep the things you need during the journey accessible. If the bag already feels awkward at home, repack before departure.

Baggage allowances depend on your airline, route and fare. Check the provider’s current information before every trip.
